Our family road trip through France was nothing short of an epic adventure, a beautiful blend of culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes. Here’s a glimpse into our family’s unforgettable tour spanning over 2000 miles.
Paris: The City of Lights
Our adventure began in Paris, the city that never sleeps. From marveling at the iconic Eiffel Tower to wandering through the historic lanes of Montmartre, each moment was magical. We indulged in croissants and café au lait at quaint street-side cafes, while the Louvre Museum left us awestruck with its vast collection of art.
Michelle of course could not resist shopping on Rue de Cambon, stopping by all the designer stores along the Champs-Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe all the way to Place de la Concorde.
Versailles: A Royal Encounter
Next, we headed to Versailles, where the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles captivated us. The Hall of Mirrors was a spectacular sight, and the gardens were a perfect backdrop for family photos. We felt like royalty walking through the lush greenery and intricate fountains.
Loire-Atlantique: The Land of Châteaux
Loire-Atlantique greeted us with its stunning Châteaux des Ducs de Bretagne, a restored 15th-century castle and Gothic-style Nantes Cathedral. We explored the beautiful which seemed straight out of a fairy tale. The kids loved the run around the gardens, and we enjoyed some exquisite local wine.
Bordeaux: A Wine Lover’s Paradise
In Bordeaux, we immersed ourselves in the world of wine. Visiting the vineyards and indulging in wine tastings was a highlight, and the city’s Gothic architecture added to its charm. We visited Château d’Agassac and enjoyed a variety of wines. The kids enjoyed exploring the public gardens, a serene escape amidst the city.
Lourdes: A Spiritual Retreat
Lourdes was a change of pace, a spiritual retreat. We visited the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, a place of peace and contemplation. The sense of tranquility here was palpable and left a lasting impression on us all.
Toulouse: Home of Airbus
Toulouse, the home of Airbus, was next. I’m super fascinated by airplanes, having tried to obtain my own private’s pilots license. It was amazing to visit the Airbus museum. Toulouse has unique terracotta buildings and vibrant streets that were enchanting. We explored the Capitole and enjoyed delicious local cuisine. I ran along the Garonne River before we headed off to Marseille.
Marseille: A Coastal Gem
Marseille’s bustling port and Mediterranean flair were refreshing. We savored seafood, explored the historic Le Panier district, and took a boat tour to the Calanques National Park, where the natural beauty was simply stunning.
Nice: The French Riviera
In Nice, we basked in the glamour of the French Riviera. The Promenade des Anglais offered picturesque sea views, and the kids loved playing on the stone beach. We explored the old town, with its vibrant markets and lively atmosphere. I took the time to enjoy a beautiful run along the promenade from the airport to the hills. I could definitely retire in Nice!
We took the train from Nice into Monte Carlo, Monaco. It was the weekend after the annual F1 race and the grand stands were still up. It was amazing to see how the roads were transformed into the street circuit I’ve enjoyed on TV. We went to the Place du Casino and enjoyed some fine foods nearby.
Avignon: A Medieval Journey
Avignon’s medieval charm was captivating. The Palais des Papes was a historical marvel, and the famous Pont d’Avignon bridge was a sight to behold. We enjoyed the tranquil gardens and the vibrant cultural scene.
Visiting Aven d’Orgnac
Between Avignon and on our way to Lyon, we stopped by the Aven d’Orgnac which is the largest subterranean cave system in France.
Lyon: A Culinary Expedition
As foodies, Lyon was a dream. Known as the gastronomic capital, we indulged in local specialties like quenelles and Lyonnaise salads. The old town, with its Renaissance architecture, was a perfect blend of history and cuisine.
Back to Paris: Au Revoir
We ended our journey where we began, in Paris. With hearts full of memories and cameras full of pictures, we said au revoir to this magnificent country, already dreaming of our next adventure.
